In addition to the facts above, Australia also has some other interesting facts that are rarely known to many people. So that you get to know more about this awesome country, here are 6 interesting facts about Australia:
1. Aboriginal Tribes
Aboriginal tribes are the original tribes
of Australia that have existed for thousands of years ago. Aboriginal tribes
have inhabited the Australian continent since 45,000 years ago this means
Aborigines are one of the oldest tribes and civilizations in Australia and
maybe even the world. But the population of the Aboriginal tribe itself is only
about 1% of the total population of Australia today. The majority of the
population of Australia today is of British descent with a percentage of more
than 52% and of them are followers of the Christian religion.
2. Almost 90% of the Population in Australia Lives in the Urban Areas
Although Australia
has a large area of about 7.62 million square kilometers, the distribution of
the population in the country is uneven. Around 90% of the population in Australia occupies major
cities in coastal areas such as Canberra, Melbourne, Sydney, Perth, and Brisbane.
The uneven
distribution of the population in Australia is due to the fact that most of the
area is an arid outback with extreme temperatures. The local people themselves
call it The Outback. In the summer temperatures in the Australian outback can
reach more than 40 degrees Celsius.
3. Has Kangaroo Population that Exceeds the
Human Population
It's not wrong for Australia to get the
nickname Kangaroo Country. Reporting from the Daily News page in 2016 there
were about 44 million kangaroos in Australia, or double the total population in
the country. Whereas in 2009 the total population of this marsupial animal was
still in the range of 27 million. The abundance of kangaroo food in nature is
thought to have caused an explosion in the population of these marsupial
animals.
Seeing the
uncontrolled kangaroo population led experts to suggest that people should use
kangaroo meat more as an effort to control their population. They worry that if
the kangaroo population is not controlled it will threaten the population of
other species in nature that share food with kangaroos.
4. Australia's native fauna is very Exclusive
Most of Australia's native animals can only be found in Australia, will not
be found in other countries. Australia's native fauna is very different from
the animals found elsewhere in the world.
They are very unique and exclusive. Among
the most famous Australian animals are kangaroos,
koalas, platypuses and the tasmanian devil.
Fun fact about Tasmanian Devil, It
is the largest carnivorous marsupial animal that
still alive on earth today after the
extinction of the Tasmanian tiger in the 20th century.
5. Home to Some Varieties of the World's Deadliest Animal Species
Australia is known to
have a variety of the deadliest and most dangerous animal species for humans.
They range from the great white shark (Carcharodon carcharias), which causes
one death per year to the inland tycoon (Oxyuranus microlepidotus), a species
of venomous snake that can kill several humans with just one bite.
Not enough with shark
and snake species, the blue-ringed octopus species (Hepalochlaena fasciata) is
known to have a dangerous poison in its bite. Reported by the Australian
Geographic page, this type of octopus bite can make the human body experience
paralysis which leads to malfunction of the heart and respiratory organs.
6. Has a Disappointment Mount or Disappointing Mountain
It is not without
reason that the Australian people named this mountain in the state of Victoria.
In 1824 Hamilton Hume and William Hovell climbed this mountain and hoped they
would see the beautiful scenery and the port of Phillip Bay when they arrived
at the top. The hiking trail they passed was heavy enough that one of them
suffered a thigh injury.
Nature seemed to be impartial to them, when they arrived at the top they couldn't see anything because there were many trees blocking the view of the peak. The name Mount Disappointment or if interpreted in Indonesian means a mountain that disappoints comes from the sense of disappointment experienced by Hamilton Hume and William Hovell.
